About Us
Lucky Dogs is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the U.S. and Asociación Civil (A.C.) in Mexico, dedicated to improving the lives of street dogs and cats in San Miguel de Allende. Our shelter provides freedom, care, and socialization, with special areas for injured animals, moms, and puppies or kittens. Guided by our full-time veterinarian, our team works 24/7 to ensure every dog and cat receives the love and attention they deserve.
Our Mission & Impact
Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs and cats in need. Beyond offering shelter, we actively connect our animals with families through three main adoption paths: weekly Petco adoption events, private appointments at our shelter, and partnerships that place them in loving homes across the U.S. and Canada. Every adoption not only transforms the life of a dog or cat but also creates room for us to save the next one waiting for help.

The Heart Behind Lucky Dogs
“
I started volunteering because I was looking for a meaningful activity and discovered how much I enjoy helping animals. By helping during dog adoption events, I not only support dogs in finding loving homes, but I also get to practice Spanish, meet new people, and learn from different perspectives on rescue work. It is an experience that requires patience and persistence, while keeping the main goal in mind: helping dogs find families and encouraging adoption. This experience has been eye-opening, showing me another side of San Miguel and how much an engaged community can make a real difference. If you would like to help make a difference, I invite you to join our volunteer efforts or support the shelter in any way you can.

I started volunteering because I’ve always been an animal lover, and I’m aware of the huge issue with abandoned dogs and cats outside of downtown San Miguel. Even if I can’t adopt as many dogs as I’d love to, volunteering is a way for me to help and be part of the solution. To me, Lucky Dogs is full of people with big hearts who truly care about these animals. I would especially love to see more support coming from Mexicans and encourage more people to get involved, whether through volunteering, donating, fostering, or simply spreading awareness. I’ve met so many amazing dogs at the shelter, and I truly believe that if people gave them a chance, they would win their hearts.

What do I like best about volunteering at Lucky Dogs? That’s a hard question. I love all of it. I love walking the dogs. I love seeing the progress that the dogs make from one week to the next. I’ve met some great people volunteering. I feel like most folks who volunteer have a really good heart, and I’ve met people that I wouldn’t have met anywhere else. I love volunteering at the adoptions and seeing how families fall in love with the dog and become their forever family. It’s wonderful, join us!
